Proposed county budget causes some questions

The 2017 proposed county budget appears to be moving ahead with little opposition.
A public hearing was held during the Pulaski County Council meeting Monday night and little was said from the audience.
It appears that several questions were asked in an email sent to the council members and addressed by Pulaski County Auditor Shelia Garling.
One of the questions regarded why the sheriff’s salary increased and Garling told the council it was because the prosecutor’s did. Because of the sheriff’s office salary matrix that was implemented recently, hourly rates and salaries will also be increased at that office.
Another question was about how the building inspector was paid and if it should equal a certain amount. Garling said the building inspector’s hourly rate is paid from two different funds and she presented the amounts to the council.
There were also other questions including the call pay regarding the coroner’s office, whether the administrative assistant pay at the highway department is part of the highway department salary matrix and if the part-time jobs at the building inspector’s office and the community development commission would be full time.
Garling said of the proposed budget there was $2.2 million cut.
Council president Jay Sullivan said it was decided that no part-time employees would be moved to a full-time position at this time.
Pulaski County Community Development Commission (CDC) Executive Director Nathan Origer questioned about the part-time position that he asked to have made full time.
Sullivan said it was not approved at the budget hearings.
Origer said he needs a full-time employee. He said after the budget hearing he understood his budget would stay intact. He also said that the CDC board has already approved the full-time position.
It was decided that a joint session would be held to discuss the full-time position.
The council would discuss any other changes to the budget at that time also.
