Smoke could be seen seeping from the top of the Tate and Lyle elevators in Francesville on Monday after an explosion.

Two injured in elevator explosion

Two men were seriously injured after an explosion occurred at the elevator in Francesville.
The explosion occurred at the Tate and Lyle Grain Inc. elevator at approximately 2:02 p.m. The grain elevator is located on the south side of town at the intersection of Bill and Lyman streets.
“As a result of the explosion there was a fire ball and two people were seriously burned,” said Monon Deputy Town Marshal Robert Hickman, who was acting on behalf of the Francesville Police Department.
The two men who were injured, a Tate and Lyle employee and a truck driver, were transported by Pulaski County EMS to a landing zone at the Fellowship Hall at the north end of town. They were then flown to South Bend.
Hickman said Tate and Lyle officials were to arrive shortly after the explosion. Until then, fire departments that responded to the incident waited.
A drone was brought to the scene to determine the amount of damage to the top of the structure. Because of the amount of wind the drone was not flown. Instead those on the ground used binoculars to access the damage.
The Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office was also called to the scene.
The roads were cut off in a two-block perimeter of the elevator to ensure public safety, although no homes were evacuated.
Those who also responded to the scene included Francesville Police Department, Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office, Monon Police Department, Pulaski County EMA, Indiana Department of Homeland Security, Pulaski County Health Department, Francesville Volunteer Fire Department, Medaryville Volunteer Fire Department, Buffalo Volunteer Fire Department and Monon Volunteer Fire Department.
The Monticello Fire Department and the Rensselaer Volunteer Fire Department each responded to the scene with an aerial truck.
Firefighters were on scene for several hours waiting for instructions.
The names of the two men who were injured were not released by the time of press.
