Donald L. “Don” Markin

Dec. 10, 1935 — May 7, 2021

Donald L. “Don” Markin, 85, of Buffalo, passed away surrounded by his family on Friday, May 7, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He had been living in Cincinnati due to health concerns.  

On December 10, 1935, Don was born on the family farm in Buffalo to the late Orvel R. and Edna C. (Dart) Markin. He was a 1954 graduate of Pulaski High School and served in the U.S. Army for three years.  

Don married Carolyn Jo Hoover on May 8, 1955, in Winamac. She passed away on February 22, 2010.  

Don spent his career managing the grain elevator in Francesville, retiring in 2000.  He was a 44-year member and former chief of the Francesville Volunteer Fire Department. Don was also a member of the Francesville First Christian Church. He enjoyed volunteering at the Humanitarian Distribution Center in Francesville. Most of all, Don loved his family, friends, community and the family farm.

Survivors include his daughter Michelle “Chelle” Gutwein of Cincinnati, Ohio; daughter-in-law Rhonda (Markin) Milner of Knox; exchange student daughter Philippa [Alex] Wood of New Zealand; grandsons: Ryan Markin of Knox, Travis [Bridget] Markin of Knox and Elijah Gutwein of Cincinnati, Ohio; granddaughter Cassie [Phillip] Brown of Cincinnati, Ohio; great-grandchildren: Kaylee, Jadyn, McKenzie, Zachary and Megan; great-great-granddaughter Addie; sister-in-law Mary [Hoover] Ingram of Francesville; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Orvel R. and Edna C. (Dart) Markin; wife Carolyn Jo (Hoover) Markin; son Michael Markin; son-in-law Roger Gutwein; brother Marvin [Carol] Markin; and sister Barbara [John] Gorter.

Visitation will be from 3:30-5:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 12, at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel in Francesville. Funeral services will follow at 5:30 p.m., with Pastor James Ketchen officiating. A recording of the services will be shared on the funeral home website.

Private burial with military honors provided by the American Legion will take place at Roseland Cemetery in Francesville.

Memorial contributions may be made to Francesville First Christian Church, Humanitarian Distribution Center, or Francesville Volunteer Fire Department.
