Helen R. Spotts

Helen R. Spotts, 96, Portland, Oregon, passed away at 6:45 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, at her residence.

She was born on Sept. 20, 1923, in McComb, Illinois, the daughter of Howard and Ethel (Foster) Ruffner. On June 23, 1946, in Freeport, Illinois, she married George Robert Spotts. He preceded her in death on Oct. 21, 2004.

Helen graduated from Indiana Central College (now the University of Indianapolis) with a bachelor’s degree in history and English. She worked as editor for David Cook Publishing in Elgin, Illinois, for numerous years and had been a homemaker raising her three children. She had been a member of the Western Spring Village Church, First Baptist Church, Goshen, and the First Baptist Church, Saginaw, Texas.

Helen will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. Her greatest gift was her hospitality towards others, also one to keep family and friend relationships across the country the center point of her life. In her spare time she would also enjoy a good book.

Survivors include her children: Linda [Dr. Gene] Reisinger of Oak Park, Illinois, Cyndi Johnson of Saginaw, Texas, and Steve [Sandie] Spotts of Hillsboro, Oregon; 17 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; and half brother Earl Ruffner.

Graveside services were conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, at Salem Cemetery, Rochester. Memorial contributions may be made to Samaritan’s Purse, Campus Crusade for Christ International or Prison Fellowship.
