Josie M. Smith

June 25, 1935 — Oct. 8, 2016

Josie M. Smith, 81, of Winamac, passed away Saturday, Oct. 8, at Porter Regional Hospital in Valparaiso. 

Josie was born on June 25, 1935, in Marmaduke, Arkansas, to the late Homer and Ruby (Frost) Jarvis. She was a graduate of Mishawaka High School. She studied at Olivet Nazarene College and went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University South Bend. On Oct. 20, 1956, she married the love of her life, Harold L. Smith, in Mishawaka. 

Josie was a former employee of McGill’s in Culver, and Monticello. 

Josie had been an active member of the Winamac Church of the Nazarene, where she had been involved with the children’s ministry through vacation Bible school and Sunday school. 

Josie enjoyed painting and was an accomplished artist. She also enjoyed genealogy. 

Josie was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and will be sadly missed.

She is survived by her husband Harold L. Smith of Winamac; sons: Steven M. [Deb] Smith of Lakewood, Colorado, and Glenn R. [Rene] Smith of Star City; daughter Cheryl P. [Eugene] Berg of Monterey; grandchildren: Melanna, Travis, Dwan, Kacie, Isaac, Abby, Jalysa, Shawn, and Alex; many great-grandchildren; sisters: Charlene [Paul] Meyering, Christine Louise [Don] Robison, and Linda [Bob] Koontz; and several nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents Homer and Ruby (Frost) Jarvis. 

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac. Burial will take place at Reed Cemetery in Winamac. 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Winamac Church of the Nazarene.
