Larry D. “Bean” Shidler

April 24, 1940 — May 10, 2019

Larry D. “Bean” Shidler, 79, of Winamac, passed away Friday, May 10, surrounded by his family at home. 

Bean was born on April 24, 1940, in Pulaski, to the late Thomas and Ruth Florence (Biddle) Shidler Sr. On June 29, 1959, he married the late Geneva Hines in Winamac. She passed away on June 2, 2003. Bean worked as a farmer and ironworker most of his life. He was a member of Ironworkers Local #292 in South Bend. He was also a member of Moose Lodge #2513 and Fraternal Order of Eagles #2580 in Winamac as well as the Sons of the American Legion Post #92 in North Judson. 

Bean enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, hunting and camping. He was an avid NASCAR fan having spent a lot of time at Shady Hill, Eldora and Talladega. Bean was a talented ironworker, woodworker, builder and problem solver. He like to listen to bluegrass and country music.

Bean loved his family very much, especially spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved him. 

Survivors include his daughters: Kathy Rehm, and Karen [Ted] Wolfe of Winamac; sons: Larry D. “Charlie” Shidler Jr. of Winamac, Jesse [Karen] Shidler of Winamac, Billy Shidler of Winamac, Oscar [Heather] Shidler of Winamac, and Adam [Lela] Shidler of Winamac; 30 grandchildren; lots of great-grandchildren; brothers: Ralph Shidler of Medaryville, and Richard “Bick” Shidler of Argos; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. 

He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Ruth Florence (Biddle) Shidler Sr.; wife Geneva Hines Shidler; daughter Cheryl Mulcare; grandson Joshua Wolfe; two great-granddaughters; sister Wanda Myers; brothers: Arnold “Jack” Shidler, Edward Shidler, Wayman “Bug” Shidler, Garold Shidler, Donald Shidler, Nelson Shidler, Orville “Todd” Shidler, Thomas Shidler, Paul Shidler and John Shidler. 

Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac. An Eagle’s memorial service will follow at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 16, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac, with Rev. David Norris officiating. Burial will take place at Mt. Zion-Franklin Township Cemetery in Winamac.
