Leona A. Sommers

Sept. 25, 1929 — April 5, 2017

Leona A. Sommers, 87, of Winamac, passed away at 8:10 a.m. Wednesday, April 5, at Pulaski Health Care Center in Winamac. 

She was born on Sept. 25, 1929, in Kewanna, to the late Jonas and Genevieve Kuhn. On Jan. 19, 1963, Leona married Paul Sommers Jr. in Winamac. He survives. 

Leona was a faithful member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church as well as the Ladies of Charity, Christian Mothers, and Victorian Ladies. She enjoyed volunteering on Saturday mornings at the Good Samaritan Store and helping with funeral dinners. 

Leona was a proud homemaker and farmwife. She enjoyed baking, sewing, quilting, canning, and helping on the farm. Leona also enjoyed flying with Paul and had taken flight lessons. She was a member of the Indiana Flying Farmers and International Flying Farmers. Leona was a collector of bells and Christmas village houses. November was always spent decorating the house for the Sommers family Christmas and hosting bunco the first Thursday in December. 

Leona was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved her. 

She is survived by her husband Paul P. Sommers Jr. of Winamac; daughters: Nancy Sommers of Indianapolis, Marie [Tom] Hunt of Indianapolis, and Tina [Dave] Bengs of Valparaiso; son Steven [Danna] Sommers of Winamac; grandsons: Nathan Sommers, Adam Sommers, Samuel Bengs and Joseph Bengs; granddaughters: Kathryn Sommers, Gabriele Bengs and Cassandra Bengs; sisters: Mary Pletka of Orlando, Florida, and Frances [Bernard] Knouff of Winamac; and brother James Kuhn of Winamac. 

She was preceded in death by her parents: Jonas Mathias and Genevieve Rosella (Weaver) Kuhn; siblings: Bernice Braun, Agnes Bossung, Theresa Olson, Ruth Ann Kuhn (Sister Terrance), Ralph Kuhn, Richard Kuhn, Leonard Kuhn (twin), and triplets (two boys and one girl). 

Visitation was from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, April 9, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac. A scriptural wake service was held at 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home followed by a Ladies of Charity and Christian Mothers Service. A funeral mass was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 10, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Winamac. Rev. Leroy Kinnaman officiated. Burial took place at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Winamac. 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pulaski Health Care Center or to Ladies of Charity.
