Mary Lou Pickett

Mary Lou Pickett, 76, of La Porte, passed away unexpectedly at 10 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 11, at La Porte Hospital.

She was born Dec. 25, 1940, in Salyersville, Kentucky, to James and Bertha (Stephens) Craig.

Upon graduation from high school in North Judson, Mary served her country and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army. Following her discharge, she worked at several places, including Austin All, Knox BMV, and was a 1978 graduate of cosmetology school. She served as trustee for Franklin Township in Pulaski County in the 1980s. Her family was very proud that later in life she went to Ivy Tech to earn her associate degree in nursing and fulfilled a lifelong dream to work in the medical field. Mary was a licensed practical nurse. She retired several years ago.

Mary enjoyed family, especially the time spent with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed listening to southern gospel music and going to jams with her brother, Adam. Mary was a good cook, and her pecan pie was the highlight of Thanksgiving meals.

She attended New Hope Baptist Church, Knox, for many years.

On June 21, 1976, in Shelbyville, Tennessee, she married Paul Pickett, who preceded her in death.

Surviving are her sons: Erik [Andrea] Back of La Porte, and Brandon [Lauren] Pickett of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; brother Adam Craig of Winamac; grandchildren: Allison, Nolan and Evan Back, and Noah, Christopher, Samuel and Peter Pickett; and many nieces and nephews.

Also preceding her in death were her parents; first husband Ernest Back Sr.; newborn son Ernest Back Jr.; and brothers: James, Wendell and Raleigh Craig.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 3, at New Hope Baptist Church, 2485 S. 350 E., Knox. Burial has taken place at Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Salvation Army, 3240 Monroe St., La Porte, IN 46350 or to a charity of the donor’s choice in memory of Mary Lou Pickett.
