William R. “Bill” Maxwell

April 14, 1937 — March 16, 2023

William R. “Bill” Maxwell, 85, of Winamac, passed away Thursday, March 16, at Northwest Health Hospital in LaPorte. 

He was born on April 14, 1937, in Gary, to the late William L. and Helen (Riley) Maxwell. Bill graduated in 1956 from Edison High School in East Gary. On Oct. 19, 1957, he married Judith D. “Judy” Wignall in East Gary.  She passed away on April 9, 2012.

Bill lived in East Gary for 29 years before moving to Winamac in 1966. He was a former member of East Gary Volunteer Fire Department. Bill began working at U.S. Steel while in high school until he moved to Winamac. He worked at Winamac Steel from 1967 until they closed in the mid 90’s. Bill then went to work at Eaton’s until his retirement in 1999.  

Bill was a former posse member of the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department under his uncle (former) Sheriff George Riley. He was a member of the Winamac VFW Auxiliary Post #1728 and Winamac FOE #580.  

Bill enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his family.  

He is survived by his daughters: Connie D. Perkins, of Winamac and Becky J. Havard of Lake Station; son George E. Maxwell of Winamac; grandsons: Peter Havard and Skyler Perkins; granddaughters: Stacey [Randy] Price, Tracey Havard and Shannon [Patrick] Pitcher; sisters-in-law: Jackie [Bud] Bishop and Melodee Martin; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by father William L. Maxwell; mother Helen W. (Riley) Bundy; step-father Harvey E. Bundy; wife Judith D. (Wignall) Maxwell; and brother George Noel Maxwell.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 25, at Winamac Cemetery (McKinley Addition) in Winamac with Rev. Edward Clark officiating.

Burial will take place at Winamac Cemetery (McKinley Addition) in Winamac.  

Memorial contributions may be made to Pulaski County Human Services Food Pantry.
