Former administrator of Hoosier EMS ordered to pay more than $1 million

Another suspect in the case of fraudulent Medicare billing has been sentenced for conspiracy to commit health care fraud. 
Anthony Bitterling, 42, of Winamac, was sentenced to 24 months in prison, 400 hours of community service, and two years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay $1,062,181 in restitution. 
Bitterling, along with Kahley Vergon-Mayotte, 29, of Reynolds, and Roy Dunn, 62, of Monticello, were administrators of Hoosier EMS. The ambulance company was started by Dunn and his stepson Bitterling.
According to court documents, Hoosier EMS transported 12 patients to dialysis centers for treatment. When the paperwork for Medicare reimbursement was completed,  it indicated that the patients were “unable to walk,” when in fact they could. Because of the alleged fraudulent billing, Hoosier EMS received about $1,088,039 in payments.
