Monterey council voice concerns regarding wastewater sewer project

After much chastising from the Monterey Town Council during a regular meeting, they decided to let bids on the upgrading of the wastewater treatment plant and sewer system project. 
On Feb. 10, Monterey council members met with representatives from Commonwealth Engineering and Kankakee-Iroquois Regional Planning Commission (KIRPC) to discuss their concerns. Councilmen Doug Denton and Jim Fleury voiced their displeasure with the costs of the project. 
Councilman Jim Fleury also questioned why there has been a fluctuation in estimated costs.
“From the very first day we told you that we only had $275,000 period. These numbers are bouncing all over the place,” he said. “I’m just curious how these numbers are bouncing around so easy. Do you know what you are doing?”  
During the meeting on Feb. 10, council members were reviewing the new cost calculations. The project is currently in the final design phase and is now ready for the project to be advertised and bids received. 
Councilman Doug Denton also questioned the changes. His problem is the wide discrepancy with each line item. 
“I guess my concern, is basically, I think the paperwork is sloppy. I will be very honest with you, I do this too for a living — this is sloppy,” Denton said. 
He said the company should never have given them a preliminary report that is $46,000 more than the final design phase. He questioned if the final design phase costs of about $219,000 were possible.  
The council approved for the project to be advertised for bids. 
The project is to be completed by April of 2017.
