Myron S. Henry

Myron Stanley Henry, Ph.D., 84, of The Villages, Florida, passed away Sunday, June 14, at the Munson Hospice House in Traverse City, Michigan.

He was born on Nov. 13, 1941, in Logansport, to the late Eugene Morley Henry and Hazel Lucille (Myers) Henry. His early childhood years were spent in Peru, on the banks of the Wabash River, enjoying the sights and sounds of passing trains with his brother, Larry.

Myron attended Kokomo High School where he fell in love with tennis and excelled at the sport throughout his high school career, graduating in 1959. At Ball State University, he met Mary Carolan Gorman, and on Aug. 18, 1962, they exchanged vows in Mary’s hometown of Michigan City. In 1963, Myron graduated from BSU with his bachelor’s degree.

At a time when NASA was looking for new mathematicians, the administration sought out Myron and offered him a grant to obtain a master’s and doctorate in mathematics from Colorado State University. After he earned his degrees, NASA offered him a job in Huntsville, Alabama — but it was too late. Myron and Mary had fallen in love with the Rocky Mountains and decided to remain “out West.”

Myron had an impressive career in higher education that took him and his family all over the United States. He held positions as a math professor at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana; Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan; Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia; Provost at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio; and Provost at University of Southern Mississippi, along with Faculty Senate President, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. After a lifetime dedicated to teaching, Myron (and Mary) retired to The Villages, Florida, where he enjoyed golf, duplicate bridge, road trips to Indiana and Michigan to see family and plane trips to see more of the world.

Travel was a passion of Myron’s, and during the course of his lifetime, he visited all 50 states and saw many interesting places, including The Great Wall of China, the “Leaning” Tower of Pisa, the Panama Canal, and the Studebaker National Museum (many times).

Myron was active in many organizations throughout his life. The Boy Scouts of America meant a great deal to him after he attained the rank of Eagle Scout in 1955 in the same Court of Honor as his brother and father. He was a lifetime member of the Winamac VFW Auxiliary, and a longtime member of Rotary International, earning Rotarian of the Year in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. In The Villages, he served on the board of the Property Owners Association and as President of the Western States Club, and a was an active member of the “We Walkers” group.

Myron cherished his family and friends and will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him. He was a great son, husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin and friend.

Myron’s family includes his wife, Mary Carolan (Gorman) Henry, The Villages, Florida; his daughters: Carrie Henry [Terry Veit], Traverse City, Michigan and Anita Henry, Traverse City, Michigan; his granddaughters: Abby Veit and Marin Henry, Traverse City, Michigan; his niece, Karen Kraft [Robert Kraft], Lake Worth, Florida; his great-niece, Vanessa Kraft-Specht [Zac Specht and baby Hazel], Fort Myers, Florida; his nephew, Kevin Henry; great-nephews: Michael Henry and Matt Henry, Burlington, Kentucky; and first cousins: Raymond Henry [Dee], Rana Parish [Alvin], Marvin Henry, Greg Henry [Brenda], Clint Henry, Carla Shidler, Marshall Henry [Melanie], Debbie Fisher, and Todd Henry [Anjana].

Myron is preceded in death by his parents: Eugene and Hazel Henry; and his brother, Larry Eugene Henry.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 30, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac, with Pastor Kim Powell officiating.

Burial will take place at Winamac Cemetery (McKinley Addition) in Winamac.

Memorial contributions may be made to BSA Troop #229, the Winamac VFW Post #1728 Auxiliary War Memorial Project, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
