Leon Ulery
Robert Leon Ulery, 98, of Star City, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 13, in Crawfordville, Florida.
He was born on July 26, 1927 in North Manchester, to the late Frank O. and Freda (Anderson) Ulery. Leon graduated from Laketon High School in Laketon, with the class of 1945. He proudly served in the US Army Band during WWII. Leon worked hard throughout his life. Most of his career was spent as a truck driver but he also owned and operated his own refrigeration repair business for many years.
On May 23, 1981, Leon married Phebe Elizabeth “Liz” Gunion in Carrabelle, Florida. She passed away on Aug. 24, 2022. Leon was a talented singer who enjoyed using his gift to praise the Lord and bless others. He was a founding member of the Star City Community Church but was active in other local churches prior to that. Leon was a beloved member of the Star City Community and was active with the Star City Lions Club for many years. In 2024, Leon moved to Crawfordville to live with his granddaughter, Brittney, and her family who lovingly cared for him until his passing. His life was a gift to all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by son Danny Lee [Sandra] Ulery, Pinnacle, North Carolina; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister Betty Marie Behnken, Muncie; many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by parents: Frank O. and Freda (Anderson) Ulery; wife Phebe Elizabeth “Liz” Gunion; sons: John Robert Ulery and Bryan Smith; daughter Susan [Norman] Pollock; and sisters: Louise Shivley Daggett and Evelyn Norris.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 28, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac.
A Lion’s Memorial Service will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 28, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 29, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac, with Chaplain Tim Lee officiating.
Burial will take place at 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 29, at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in North Manchester. The American Legion and US Army will conduct military honors.
Memorial contributions may be made to Star City Community Church.
